Chance to help name new family centre

Residents of Wyndham City, including Werribee, are being invited to help name a new $8.2 million family centre currently being built in Manor Lakes.

The council has put forward four options of names that reflect the local environment, location and Aboriginal history, and it is now inviting locals to take part in voting for their favourite.

Construction began on the integrated family centre at Manor Lakes North earlier this year and is expected to be completed early in 2023. The works are being carried out to service the area's ever-expanding community and include a kindergarten for children aged three and four, plus family support and maternal child health services.

Manor Lakes is considered an area of high growth, with resident numbers expected to quadruple within the next two decades.

Two of the proposed names, Birnbial Family Centre and Marna Family Centre, were put forward after the council had consulted with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation and the Registered Aboriginal Party. Marna means “hand”, while Birnbial is Aboriginal for “rainbow”.

The other name options for the family centre are Grey Box, reflecting the name of a National Trust Significant Eucalyptus tree that grows nearby, and Holyoake Parade, which is based on the centre's location.

Media reports and flyer printing campaigns have often helped spread the word about opportunities to help name local community facilities such as the new family centre.

Voting closes on Friday, 24 June.
