Move for new Mens Shed for Casey gains support

Narre Warren, Victoria could be home to a new Men’s Shed in the future following the latest initiative of City of Casey councillors to explore funding options and earmark an appropriate site.

The move comes after it was announced recently that the Victorian Government would provide up to $60,000 to Councils and community groups to construct new Men’s Sheds.

Speaking in favour of the proposal, Councillor Rafal Kaplon, who represents the ward of Four Oaks, said the addition of a men’s shed in either of the proposed locations of Endeavour Hills or Narre Warren North would be great for the community.

According to the councillor, printing services and community Flyers often encouraged participation in Men’s Sheds, which provide an opportunity to make a positive input into the community while also sharing skills, learning and connecting with others.

He added that, in addition to building self-esteem and a sense of purpose for participants, research has found the facilities also combated issues of social isolation and also actively assisted in men’s health.

When scanning information freely available on Men’s Sheds websites across the country, the community-based operation has revealed it is also allowing handyman and woodworking skills to be maintained and shared with others.

Cr. Kaplon acknowledged the Men’s Sheds role, claiming council should actively seek funding to establish a facility in Casey’s north.
