Winning photograph inspires creative juices to flow

Creative juices flowed to produce entries in the 2015 Kingston Youth Services ‘Ink About It’ Awards.

Talented young writers from Moorabbin, Victoria and throughout the City of Kingston area wasted no time in submitting their individual song lyrics, poems and short stories based on each one’s interpretation of the recently judged Kingston Youth Services ‘Picture This’ photography competition-winning entry, titled ‘Autumn Snow’.

The entry, which featured a country road covered in snow and a lone figure disappearing into the distance, was the work of a Year 7 student at Heatherton Christian College, Tess McCracken.

Since Tess’s win, her work has been displayed in the media and on promotional Brochures.

Her prizewinning photograph proved inspirational to the more than 100 young people who took part in the Ink About It Awards.

The competition was open to young people aged 12 to 25 years who had a connection to Kingston.

The three winners were announced recently during a special presentation ceremony held at the Shirley Burke Theatre in Parkdale.

Matthew Duigan, 25, of Dingley Village won first prize for his short story, ‘The Silver Fox’.

Second prize went to Mordialloc’s Ella Mairs, 13, for her entry ‘Devil in Disguise’ and Year 10 student Joshua Ratten’s poem ‘What Lies Beyond the Fog?’ scored him third place.

The awards were judged by local youth and representatives from Kingston Youth Services.
