Westall Community Hub a step closer after new grant awarded

Moorabbin residents will be among thousands of locals to benefit from a new learning centre and community library to be built at Westall.

The $8m project, which was an initiative of Kingston City Council, has recently received a boost, with the State Government providing a $750,000 grant as part of its Living Libraries Fund.

Construction of children’s and family service hubs is already underway at Parkdale and Edithvale. Westall will be the third major centre of its type in the council’s area.

News of the grant was well-received by Mayor Paul Peulich, who said the community learning and library hub was an integral part of the project. Community members will have access to physical and digital resources, services, and technology.

There will also be something for all ages, such as reading sessions and regular story time for tiny tots. Meanwhile, for older members of the community, the venue will provide a meeting place for local groups.

The council’s aim is to provide easy access for families to services relating to education, literacy, language, and health in a ‘one-stop shop’ situation within existing schools.

When complete, the council is expected to use printing company services to publicise the centre and its assistance programs to ensure residents are aware of its opening hours and facilities.

It is expected that work on the Westall hub will commence late in 2015.
