Moorabbin-based Avia Aircraft has secured delivery of Australia’s first EA500 aircraft, expected to arrive before Christmas. The Extra 500 is the latest creation of Walter Extra, who specializes in powerful aerobatic planes, built primarily of composite materials. The planes are distinguished by their cantilevered strutless wing.

The EA500 uses up to 20% less fuel and offers more power than such comparative aircraft as the Piper Meridian and TBM850, offering faster speeds at lower altitudes. The competitive price tag of $1.75m also makes the EA500 an appealing alternative to other private jets such as the Cirrus SF50. The EA500 is fitted with a Rolls-Royce 250 engine, seats six people, and has a cruising speed above 200 knots at flight altitudes, with a maximum speed of 270mph.

With its lower fuel burns, the aircraft is an astute investment for Avia Aircraft. The aerobatic design makes the EA500 an ideal aircraft for training and recreation, with the ability to perform manoeuvres not suited to regular aircraft. Aerobatic flying requires a high knowledge of piloting skills, as the aircraft is exposed to increased structural stress.

Extra began his foray into aircraft design in 1982, after competing in the World Aerobatic Championships. His revolutionary designs continue to dominate world competitions to this day.
