Previous attempts at the removal of cats proved futile due to the territorial nature of the animals. When one dominating cat is removed, another simply moves in to take its place, continuing to breed and multiply.
In this new program, kittens and tame cats are being de-sexed and re-housed rather than put down. According to Michelle Wall of Parkdale Veterinary Clinic, the work being performed by volunteers is having a significant impact on cat populations. She said:
“A lot of these cats are factory cats that keep the vermin population down. But they haven’t been de-sexed so breeding gets out of control, especially in summer.”
The rapid increase in cat numbers has caught factory owners by surprise. They hope this initiative will manage the population by slowing the breeding process down. Ms Wall stated that dozens of factory cats have been de-sexed and re-housed in the past two months. She said:
“These poor cats are living a very ordinary life. It’s great to be able to give them a second start.”
In 2012, Kingston Council impounded over 300 cats. Humane euthanasia of feral animals also remains an option in areas where populations are out of control or causing serious risk to the health and safety of residents and workers.
