An innovative community football hub is on the way in the City of Kingston.
In a joint project involving community football leagues, the AFL, St Kilda Football Club, Kingston Council and the Victoria Government, Moorabbin Reserve is set to be transformed into a leading sporting facility.
According to a Council spokesman, demolition works to remove existing buildings on the site are soon to begin. This, he said, will make way for work to start on the two-stage construction of new facilities by ADCO Constructions Pty Ltd.
Kingston Mayor David Eden said that when complete, the redevelopment will lead the way as the first major facility nationwide to cater for everyone from Auskick juniors to elite AFL players.
He said it will also service the St Kilda Football Club, Sandringham Dragons, South Metro Junior Football League, Southern Football Netball League, and AFL Victoria, a fact that will be reflected in many future Promotional Products and Business Cards associated with each organisation.
The Moorabbin reserve project will also benefit from a $4m contribution by Council, according to Mayor Eden.
He said a $1m investment of funds will be put towards upgrading surrounding parkland.
The project will include a number of major innovations ranging from new training facilities for local community clubs and St Kilda Football Club, to a public piazza to host community events.
Stage One of the project is due to be completed by the 2017/2018 pre-season, followed in September/October 2018 by Stage Two.
