A United States inspired AniMeals program to help feed pets whose owners are struggling to make ends meet is set to be the subject of a pilot program in Glen Eira, near Moorabbin, Victoria.
The receipt of a $3,000 State Government grant has enabled the Victorian Dog Rescue and Resource Group to trial the concept.
As part of the pilot, volunteers help out elderly, disabled or hardship-inflicted residents by providing pet food for their animals.
Trish Taylor, group president of the not for profit organisation, said there were instances where some people were feeding their animals before themselves. In some cases, dogs were missing out completely.
The Victorian Dog Rescue and Resource Group currently operates a number of programs to assist animals, including the Drought Dogs Program (DDP) to help save cats and dogs in pounds throughout Victoria.
It was estimated that up to 80% of strays or unclaimed pets being held in the pounds were never retrieved by their owners and had to be put down.
As a direct result of the DDP initiative, which transports animals from country pounds back to Melbourne for rehousing, up to 1,000 dogs and 100 cats have been helped.
Flyer and poster printing campaigns to do with lost dogs and cats can often prompt people to spare a few dollars for organisations and initiatives like this.
