Motoring exhibition coming to Moorabbin

Exotic cars will be taking over the Australian National Aviation Museum at Moorabbin Airport this weekend.

Bugatti, Alfa Romeo and Maserati are just some of the big names on show as part of the annual ‘Wings & Wheels’ event, which runs over two days.

Along with the exotic representatives, there will also be some famous motors. A luxury touring car made by Hispano Suiza, which translates as ‘Spanish-Swiss’, will be on show for punters to get a closer look at. The car has featured on the ABC TV series ‘Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries.

This Spanish firm was renowned for quality and mechanical engineering and at the onset of WWI switched to aircraft engine manufacturing. At the company's peak, its cars were among the world’s most expensive.

The event organisers may well highlight the interesting details of each car with the help of flyer printing, which is an inexpensive way to communicate to museum visitors.

On permanent display at the ANAM will be an emergency escape module from the cockpit of an F-111 military aircraft. Typically a favourite display of the show’s younger visitors, this module showcases the use of rockets for improved pilot safety.

During the 1960s, the module was introduced to allow the crew of two to ditch their aircraft without the need to wear parachutes. Crew would remain contained in the module and rockets would blast them out into the air. Parachutes attached to the module allowed it to land on water or earth, with the crew safe and sound.

The show takes place on Saturday and Sunday and will be open from 10:00am until 5:00pm both days.
