Kingston City offers volunteering opportunity

Residents in the Kingston City Shire looking to contribute to their community are able to volunteer their time at FareShare’s Kitchen Garden located in Moorabbin.

FareShare, an organisation that began in 2000 by a local pastry chef, recognised the enormous food wastage that takes place daily in Melbourne. This inspired him to address hunger issues and to take action.

FareShare rescues quality surplus food from farmers, wholesalers, supermarkets and manufacturers thereby reducing landfill waste and pollution. The rescued food is collected in refrigerated vans and transported to its production sites where it is cooked into nutritious ready-to-eat meals for the vulnerable.

The success of FareShare has meant increased demand, and in order to cook the 1.7 million meals requested by charities each year, the company relies heavily on volunteers and on supplementing donated food by growing its own vegetables.

FareShare Kitchen Gardens is the solution to this problem and where it grows surplus vegetables. The Moorabbin kitchen garden is a small plot of disused land donated by the Goodman Foundation and The Moorabbin Airport Corporation. It is located next to the aviation museum and consists of raised beds in which root vegetables are planted.

A kitchen garden manager supervises volunteers who participate in half-day shifts. Tasks include planting, weeding, fertilizing, mulching, propagating and harvesting. Volunteer organisations may utilise flyer printing to educate the community about their projects.

Volunteer shifts at the Moorabbin Kitchen Garden take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. More information and volunteer registration Forms can be found online.
