Innovative art contest a real winner

Moorabbin company Gemel Art Supplies is letting the consumer be the judge in an innovative contest combining social media and art. Entries remain open until 20 October in the Kingston Voyages Contest, where photographs of an artist’s best work are submitted to the Gemel Art Facebook page. The photo that gets the most ‘likes’ wins, with the most popular work receiving a $200 cash prize, plus $500 worth of Gemel Art Supplies quality canvas and art materials.

In a real bonus for the best artists, their winning works will be displayed at the much-anticipated Kingston Voyages concert. A celebration of Melbourne’s diversity, the concert will be held in Kingston City Hall, 27 October, at 7:30 pm. A song composed in reference to the winning artwork will also be performed at the concert.

The combination of social media and the arts community is becoming a real grassroots movement. In this latest initiative, the artist, promoter and art critic all participate or benefit in many ways - virtually, through hard copy, and on display in front of a large audience. The opportunity to market popular works is diverse. Artwork transformed by expert Print companies can be repackaged as a quality brochure, personalised digital Business Cards, or even a calendar.

The concert is a highlight of cultural Melbourne. Artists can expect to see their works displayed to the backdrop of non-stop music and dance in multiple Forms. From the Magnificent Wurlitzer organ and opera, spoken word of Buddhist monks, or mantras from the Radhe Krishna band, the concert reflects the vitality of art in multicultural Melbourne.
