Grand old Kingston City Hall building focus of major upgrade

A major $575,000 refurbishment is set to begin on the Kingston City Hall.

The iconic building, which for many years has been a key community venue servicing residents from throughout the local government area, including Moorabbin, will be given a facelift, according to a City of Kingston spokesman.

He said the project would include the installation of glass door panels along the building’s north wall to improve links between outdoor and indoor areas, and connect it with the Kingston Arts Centre next door.

Flyer printing promoting events held at the community centre has covered everything from graduation ceremonies, school performances, markets and expos, to community concerts. Mayor of Kingston Tamsin Bearsley says this is evidence of the important role it fills as a major focus within the city.

She said new life would be breathed into the grand old venue as a result of the extensive refurbishments, which will also benefit many thousands of annual visitors.

The benefits, said the Mayor, will also extend to people with a disability and elderly residents, and make it easier for them to attend shows on the Kingston Arts programme for 2016 and beyond.

Upgrades included in the extensive programme will include improvements to cooling and heating, access for those with disabilities, upgrades to the café, box office and foyer, and the installation of a new passenger lift.
