Moorabbin residents and businesses could soon have a new place to shop, with bulk-buy retailer Costco applying for permission to build a new store in the area.
Costco runs large member-only discount stores where members of the public and business owners can buy in bulk and shop at wholesale prices. The stores are popular with shoppers on a budget, and with small grocery store owners who buy wholesale to stock their own shelves.
The company is looking to expand further into Melbourne and has applied to build a new warehouse store at Moorabbin Airport. If approval is given, the facility would be built on Chifley Drive and it is thought more than 300 jobs would be created as a result.
Costco currently has three stores in Australia, including one in the Docklands area of West Melbourne. The company is planning to open another three in the next year, including one in the eastern suburb of Ringwood next month, but the Moorabbin warehouse would be the first in the city’s south-east.
The Federal Government will need to approve the scheme, and local people with an interest in the plans will be able to put their views forward during the process.
Printing companies may be called upon to provide Flyers and Brochures to ensure members of the community are kept informed of the developments.
A number of information sessions will be held before submissions have to be made, so local people can find out more about the proposed building and its potential impact.
