Council submits running track upgrade project for funding

A Moorabbin running track has been earmarked for a $1.2m upgrade by Kingston Council.

The Council has applied to the Community Sports Infrastructure Fund to access money for the upgrade project at the GR Bricker Reserve Athletics Track.

Mayor Geoff Gledhill said council had already pledged $700,000 to the project for the period ending 2017, with work to include a running track upgrade.

He said improved conditions on the track would benefit the Moorabbin Little Athletics Club’s up to 250 junior athletes.

Mayor Gledhill praised the job the club had done on promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for many of its youthful members each year, and said it was time an upgrade to the facility was forthcoming to provide a safe, modern track on which they could train and compete.

As part of the upgrade, Mayor Gledhill said a modern rubber surface, which is required in competitive racing, would replace the current bitumen surface. The project will also include drainage works.

Members of the community are expected to be kept informed of progress at the track via flyer printing and the council website.

Mayor Gledhill said it was hoped the application for funding of the project would be successful, as council was only permitted to submit one project for major facilities funding from the Council for Sport and Recreation Victoria.

The announcement of successful projects will be made in March 2016.
