A 50-year lease for the St Kilda Football Club to lease the Moorabbin Reserve has been approved by Kingston Council in conjunction with the site’s $29m redevelopment.
According to Kingston Mayor Tamsin Bearsley, tighter controls have been included in the new lease. These require funding and maintenance of the structure to be carried out by the club.
St Kilda Football Club will also pay an annual rental of $81,905 in the first 10 years, followed by $123,905 each year thereafter (indexed annually).
Mayor Bearsley said she is confident conditions of the new lease, combined with a more positive approach on the part of St Kilda Football Club, will provide a top result for the entire community.
In addition to the major redevelopment serving as the home base for St Kilda, which has featured many times on Postcards promoting the area, the site will be transformed into an important community football hub to be enjoyed by thousands of people living in the local area.
The Mayor said that also included in the project is an upgrade to surrounding parkland and the provision of an indoor sports court.
Funding for the redevelopment of Moorabbin Reserve is made possible by a $12m contribution by the Victoria Government, $5m from the St Kilda Football Club, $6m from AFL Victoria and AFL and $400,000 from the community football leagues.
Mayor Bearsley said a further $5m in funding is being contributed to the project by Kingston Council.
