The students exceeded all expectations in defeating prestigious overseas universities and winning first prize. The project is going from strength to strength, with new and exciting creations, including a meditation and Indigenous Cultural Centre. The centre will be constructed using only recyclable and sustainable materials. Head of sustainability Bill Thomas said:
“It will be a unique teaching space in Australia and will be made available to the many community groups that have supported the project.”
The award is another feather in the cap of Mr. Thomas, who has previously won a Queens Birthday Honours Public Service Award, the Prime Ministers Environmentalist of the Year Award, and a Churchill Fellowship. The International Green Award was first presented in 2006, aimed at rewarding innovative sustainability approaches in business, education, and government.
Bentleigh Secondary College students have also created an urban forest and wetlands area, used as an outdoor learning experience. The rainwater collection system has reduced water waste by 91%, with overflow utilized in the sustainable vegetable garden. Community support has created a groundswell that continues to inspire the broader population.
The new Indigenous Centre wetland has been planted with vegetation typical of the area before European settlement and has attracted over 20 species of birds and frogs to the site. Local Print companies are instrumental in capturing the beauty of such significant projects by poster, brochure and flyer printing.Get a Free Quote for Print
