All hands on deck to help clean up Australia

Residents in Moorabbin and surrounding areas of Victoria are being encouraged to put on the gloves and help clean up Australia.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day, which gives locals an opportunity to personally take part in removing rubbish from the streets, parks and beaches.

Geoff Gledhill, City of Kingston Mayor, said the event gave residents a chance to do something positive and rewarding for their area.

He said the joint effort by members of the community made the cleanup task quicker, easier and a great deal of fun for all involved while also achieving the end result of creating a litter-free environment.

More than half a million volunteers have come together in recent years to take part in the nationwide cleanup of 7,000 sites and in excess of 16,000 tonnes of rubbish.

Each year, residents are requested to take part in the mass operation via independent council websites and flyer printing.

Mayor Gledhill advised all volunteers to wear sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen, and to ensure they had plenty of drinking water.

The City of Kingston will host seven Clean Up Australia teams at various times during Sunday, March 1st.

Community volunteers can choose to take part at any one of the following locations: Mordialloc Creek 10am – 1pm; Parkdale foreshore 10am – 11am; Aspendale Foreshore 9am – 10pm; Chelsea Foreshore 9.30am – 10.30am; Edithvale wetlands 2pm – 3pm; Chelsea Railway Station 10am – 1pm; and Braeside Park 10am – 1pm.
