Funding on offer for Kingston groups

Community groups from Braeside have recently been able to apply to benefit from a council grant to help them with their work this year.

Applications for the latest round of community grants opened at the beginning of March, and there are thousands of dollars available in various forms.

This year, Kingston Council has changed the way it offers grants in a bid to make the system simpler and easier for organisations to understand.

The council is now providing three-year grants to established groups around the City of Kingston that offer welfare services or social opportunities.

Other organisations will be eligible for annual funding through the Community Grants Programme, which will provide sums of up to $10,000. There will also be special categories with smaller awards for arts, events aimed at children, groups that support the area’s multicultural nature, and groups that help people with disabilities.

While the funding is targeted at certain areas, there are no detailed rules on how the money must be spent. A group could use part of the grant on promotions, such as advertising an event using poster printing, or even asking brochure printers to create a small booklet describing the group’s activities and goals.

Submissions for most of the funding needed to be made by April. Specific deadlines and more information can be found on the Kingston City Council website.
