Mayor of Moreton Bay Peter Flannery said the latest tech innovation, which has come about via a partnership with tech firm Sapio, Daisy Hill Koala Centre and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, is believed to be a world first to help protect Australia's koala population. He added:
“We’re training Council’s CCTV cameras to identify koala movements across the region, so we can activate warning Signs near roads when they’re there and also better inform the design and location of our fauna crossing infrastructure.”
He said the season for koala breeding had recently begun and would continue until January next year, a period during which male koalas are often seen. It is also a time when more koalas can wander onto roads and be killed.
The Mayor said Council had invested in awareness campaigns and signs, created by professional printing services, to make drivers aware of koalas and had also erected infrastructure for fauna crossing as well as koala-proof fencing; it is hoped this latest technology will help further.
