According to Mayor Allan Sutherland, the scholarships will be available for Year 12 graduates under financial distress from throughout Moreton Bay, including Caboolture, who go on to pursue their education at the new USC Petrie campus.
The cash bursaries will be worth $8,000 per year. The Mayor said the region’s rate for students entering higher education was about 50% of the national average, adding:
“Statistics show students residing in areas of high disadvantage are significantly less likely to engage in tertiary education and complete Year 12 studies. We need to change that story for the Moreton Bay Region.”
The opening of USC’s Petrie campus next year will launch a new chapter for higher educational opportunities in Moreton Bay. Sutherland added that the costs related to tertiary study may still be an insurmountable barrier for some families saying:
“Council’s equity scholarships will remove that obstacle for successful applicants.”
Interested students will be able to apply for the MBRC Scholarship from September 2019 with successful applicants to begin their studies in 2020. The purpose of the MBRC Scholarship is to assist a student with study-related costs such as travel, living expenses, text Books and printing services.
