Work began recently to pour concrete on the new facility's first floor level, meaning construction is well over half way towards completion.
During an inspection of the site, Mayor of Moreton Bay Peter Flannery said the major precinct was one of only six established within the 86-hectare complex dedicated to sports in which the council is investing. He said sporting infrastructure such as the new extension was so important in the daily lives of residents, and added:
“It’s a key part of the greater SPSC site that Council has already invested $44 million into, including the AFL precinct which was used by the Brisbane Lions Women as a base in their inaugural season."
During the next 10 years, the council plans to contribute an additional $135 million to give locals an opportunity to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
The indoor extension at the complex includes a retractable grandstand to seat patrons, new amenities, universal change-rooms, multi-purpose courts, event and function space, spectator areas and a canteen. Adjacent will be a new touch football and rugby union clubhouse.
Flyer printing campaigns are often used to keep locals up-to-date with events and activities available at major sporting venues such as the SPSC.
The new facilities, when complete, will be able to host upward of 13 indoor sports.
