The Queensland Greats Awards are taking place again and Allan Sutherland, Moreton Bay’s Regional Mayor is appealing to residents to nominate a local hero.
Located between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, the Council’s area includes coastal and inland suburbs such as Redcliffe and Bribie Island, Caboolture, Woodford and Dayboro.
Keen to have successful representation in the 2019 annual awards, for which nominations are now open, the mayor said the area had been home to many legends like the Bee Gees, Jessicah Schipper, Petero Civoniceva and Artie Beetson, adding:
“I think it’s only logical that the next Queensland Great should come from the Moreton Bay Region because we breed extraordinary people, so I encourage locals to get involved and get nominating.”
The mayor said the categories include posthumous, instruction and individual and added:
“This significant awards programme recognises exceptional individuals and institutions for their remarkable contribution to the history and future of our great state.”
Previous winners recognised in the awards have included Steve Irwin, Clive Berghofer AM and Gail Ker OAM. The St Vincent de Paul Society and Queensland Symphony Orchestra have also been acknowledged in a total that includes 14 institutions, four posthumous recipients and 90 individuals. Award ceremonies often use banner printing to make the venue look the part.
Commemorative plaques honouring Queensland Greats are on display at the Roma Street Parkland, Brisbane. Nominations for the awards close on February 22.
