Mayor of Moreton Bay Peter Flannery said changing sea levels and the effect it has on the coastal region would begin to show and there was no time like the present to put serious thought into preventative measures to safeguard properties. He added:
“Council’s draft Living Coast Plan outlines the best course of action for residents in these areas to take now to prepare their properties, as well as identifying actions for Council and the State Government to improve coastal resilience and infrastructure.”
Mr Flannery said the council was keen to receive feedback on its draft proposal prior to finalising the plan, as it is anticipated oceanfront residents could be directly impacted by future events which could include king tides as well as regular water inundation in some homes as the decades roll on. Preventative action now, he said, is an important step to consider.
The topic of climate change has been widely publicised in the media and via brochure printing campaigns in many local government areas.
The Mayor urged residents to read the Living Coast Plan online and to provide any feedback by 16 December. All comments submitted will be considered before the Plan is formally adopted.
