Staff at Western Sydney University (WSU) will require a change to their Letterheads, as the University gets set to close its Milperra campus and build a 16-storey vertical campus in Bankstown CBD.
The current campus at Milperra specialises in Social Sciences and consists largely of students studying linguistics, educations, arts, sociology, and psychology. The university has commenced transferring courses to the Liverpool campus, with most social science courses set to be transitioned by late 2018.
WSU continues to grow with a 14-storey campus opened in Parramatta in January, a Liverpool CBD campus to be launched in February, and the new Bankstown CBD campus set to host up to 7,000 students as early as 2021.
Vice-Chancellor Barney Glover has said that it is “vitally important” to locate campuses close to major transport in order to meet the future needs of the population, and that the move will provide a strong economic backbone to the Cantebury-Bankstown region. He added:
“The new campus will almost single-handedly transform Bankstown’s CBD, injecting tens of millions into the local economy every year and further supports Canterbury-Bankstown’s status as an education and health precinct.”
Milperra residents have expressed concerns about what may be done with the site once the closure is completed. The University has yet to finalise its plans for the site, however at this stage discussions have indicated that the development of residential precincts seems likely.
