Food operators from Bankstown and Milperra, New South Wales, are among many businesses eager to take part in a local council initiative aimed at identifying top health and safety standard outlets.
According to local media, the initiative has been so successful that Bankstown City Council’s original six-month target to sign up 25 businesses had already been doubled in less than four months.
Mayor Linda Downey said the level of interest had been unexpected but was a welcome sign that had encouraged the council to raise the target to sign 50 local food operators by June.
Launched in September last year, the Scores on Doors programme offers an opportunity for food operators to be recognised with a score of one to five stars for complying with food safety and health standards.
Each would then receive a certificate of achievement which could be displayed for the benefit of customers.
The initiative is similar to the system of rating the quality of food by a star system as information for brochure printing campaigns, except the Scores on Doors system focuses on food and safety aspects instead, according to the Mayor.
Cr Downey said results of the initiative were already very promising.
Five-star ratings have already been awarded to Bankstown outlets Mr Kebabji and Castello Bakery.
Castello Bakery’s proprietor, Karim El Assidi, said the program provided an excellent opportunity to reassure customers that his outlet was being vigilant about food health and safety standards.
