Soccer players in the Bankstown, Padstow and Milperra, New South Wales, areas are benefitting from a major upgrade at Playford Park.
Bankstown City Council has recently carried out a $600,000 improvement programme that involved the installation of a new irrigation system, a subsurface drainage system and re-surfacing of three cricket and soccer fields.
The upgrades at Playford Park, Padstow, were completed in time for the start of the 2015 season in April.
Padstow United Sports Club president Jim Batch praised the work, which he said would be enjoyed by players and the entire community.
The club's fields have hosted both local and state matches, which Mr Batch said supports the need for the fields to be in top condition.
Bankstown Mayor Linda Downey said open spaces and green sites like Playford Park were part of an ongoing maintenance programme, due to the fact that they were used often by thousands of players and residents.
She said evening training sessions and major sports fixtures on weekends were a part of many families’ lives. Flyer printing also attracts many interested locals eager to show their support for the young players.
It is hoped the upgraded playing surfaces would have a beneficial effect on player performances as well, especially for members of the Padstow United teams.
Mayor Downey said repair works were also underway at the Vale of Ah sporting fields located nearby.
