New tech classes come to Milperra

Chester Hill Library and Knowledge Centre is soon to be offering one-on-one classes to locals on the art of digital literacy.

Milperra residents are encouraged to participate in the Tech Wise Buddies program, which will run on Saturday mornings this summer. Either exploring the world of smartphones, tablets or computers, library patrons can bring their device or use the library's own.

This comes four years after the introduction of the Tech Savvy Seniors program. An initiative of the New South Wales government's Ageing Strategy, this program is aimed at teaching seniors how to use their smartphones and tablets for features other than just making calls and taking photographs.

The program was put in place to help address the technology needs of seniors. Since 2012, an estimated 11,000 seniors have attended at least one Tech Savvy class across the 64 public libraries and 36 community colleges that offer the government- unded program.

The 2014 evaluation reports that 86 per cent of participants believed that the program has helped boost their confidence when using smartphones, tablets and computers, and the success of the program was likely the inspiration of the library’s newest program Tech Wise Buddies.

While the seniors class is limited to people over the age of 60, the new Tech Wise Buddies program is open to any interested library patron. Both programs have likely been advertised by graphic designed Flyers.

Sessions begin on July 4 and bookings are essential.
