The new annual Mayoral Scholarship Programme was unveiled recently by Mayor Khal Asfour who described it as providing an opportunity for talented locals to pursue their individual dreams.
He said the area's future success and prosperity will rely on its many entrepreneurs, employers, employees, artists, sportspeople and volunteers and it is important to help people develop their individual skills.
The mayor said that financial challenges have often prevented some people from moving forward with their dreams, adding:
"This scholarship program will give our residents and, in particular, its young people the helping hand they need to overcome these challenges. It will seed sparks of brilliance in our residents and inspire them to be the best they can, and use what they learn to give back to our City."
The scholarships cover the categories of Smart City, VET, Environment, Culture, Sport and Academic and are valued at between $1,000 and $4,000, respectively. The funding is to cover some of the educational costs and to buy equipment and tools.
Innovative Council initiatives such as this have often been the subject of local flyer printing campaigns to spread the word.
Applications for the latest round of scholarships close on July 31 and are available online via the council website.
