The City of Canterbury Bankstown first announced its intention to create a limited edition, locally based game of Monopoly back in May this year in a media release, stating:
"Who needs Trafalgar Square, Mayfair and Piccadilly when you can purchase Canterbury Road, the Bankstown Bunker or the Georges River National Park?"
Since November 9, interested buyers were given the opportunity to pick up or have the limited edition Monopoly delivered at a cost of $49 plus delivery. Even Neil Scallan from England, the Guinness world record-holder of Monopoly sets, has added the local version to his collection, as well as purchasing a second copy for a fellow collector living in Sweden.
Mayor of Canterbury Bankstown Khal Asfour said demand was strong, with 33 percent of stock sold within the first few weeks. He said the special edition of the timeless and classic game gave locals something of which to be proud for many years to come.
The version also highlights many of the local attractions often included in brochure printing campaigns aimed at promoting tourism in the area. Further details on how to obtain the locally inspired version of the game, which would make an ideal Christmas gift, are available on council's website.
