League legend Steve Mortimer has kicked off a new craze with the help of Bankstown City Council.
Milperra, New South Wales seniors have joined others from throughout the City to take part in the new shuffleboard events, where participants attempt to get the cues as near as possible to the scoring board.
Mortimer said the indoor activity was popular because it could be played by anyone and ability did not matter.
The former league star said shuffleboard was a great community recreation that provided many benefits physically and mentally for seniors, as well as a friendly and competitive environment for those playing.
In assisting Council to introduce it into Bankstown, Mortimer hosted a special introductory game at Council’s Greenacre-based Community Restaurant.
Flyers promoting future events are planned, and Bankstown Mayor Khal Asfour said Council was pleased to have been able to partner with such a well-respected sports legend as Mortimer to bring the activity to the area’s senior residents.
He added that he was confident seniors would be enthusiastic starters in the new shuffleboard activities.
Shuffleboard has been of great interest to Mortimer for many years. He was first introduced to the activity at a country pub where locals were testing their skills in the game and suggested he had a go.
