Train enthusiasts from Milperra, New South Wales are being treated to a unique exhibition at the Bankstown Arts Centre.
The Making Tracks exhibition has been mounted by artist Gary Smith, who has been working on the collection for the past six months.
He said the aim is to illustrate the changing faces of train travel throughout the decades, and to give locals an opportunity to step back in time.
Smith has used old train tickets to create 14 unique pieces to showcase in his latest installation at the Incubate Gallery.
When launching the exhibition earlier this month, the Revesby artists said the NSW Transport Department had only just ceased the sale of tickets, effectively ending an age-old tradition.
Smith his exhibition provided an example of how unused railway tickets could be repurposed and recycled, adding that the ways tickets have changed over time, including black and white to full colour printing and a host of graphic designs, all hold a certain fascination.
Train tickets, Smith said, also told a story for each individual traveller about where and why they were on the train. He added that tickets had changed dramatically since the early days when they included jokes, facts, puzzles, phrases and quotes.
The free Making Tracks exhibition can be viewed until August 31, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
