Two bridges that have serviced residents from Milperra and throughout the Canterbury Bankstown area for many years are to be replaced.
Work is to begin soon on the replacement of bridges in Wolumba and Hector streets, Chester Hill at an estimated cost of $5.9 million. The construction of the new structures has been instigated to provide safer access for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.
Mayor of the City of Canterbury Bankstown Khal Asfour said the lifespan of the bridges was at an end with each suffering traffic flow restrictions and a lack of proper access for cyclists. He said while minimal disruption during the construction period is expected, the project, which is anticipated to begin in the near future, will also require cooperation from local commuters.
Construction of the bridges at Wolumba and Hector streets will include the widening of traffic lanes, protected paths for pedestrians and straight structures designed to provide unobstructed and clear vision for cyclists, pedestrians and motorists. Flyer printing campaigns are often used in the local area to help keep residents informed of major projects such as this that involve any changes to traffic conditions.
Work will begin on replacement of the bridge in Hector Street first with the expected completion of both bridges scheduled for early in 2021. Further information is available on the City of Canterbury-Bankstown website.
