Competition seeks to uncover promising young writers

Aspiring young writers from Milperra and throughout the City of Canterbury Bankstown are being invited to enter this years Youth Week Creative Writing Competition.

The annual event, which has been showcasing local writing talents for nine years, is supported by Breakthru, writers group Sweatshop and the council.

Sweatshop director and judging panel member Michael Mohammed Ahmad urged entrants to submit entries based around their identity.

He said young people should write stories about themselves, including their culture, place of heritage and who they are, as well as describing personal experiences growing up in a location such as Canterbury-Bankstown.

Creativity is also encouraged, leaving the door wide open for entries such as speeches, short stories, poems and song lyrics, Ahmad said.

This years competition, which is open to entrants aged 12 to 24 years, follows the `Get involved, be heard, make a difference Youth Week theme, which has been widely advertised on Brochures.

Council Administrator Richard Colley said budding writers have a great opportunity to showcase their skills as a writer, while at the same time creating a chance to see their work included in a book.

An annual Youth Week anthology will publish the top 13 competition entries and the three top place-getters will each share in the $300 prize money. They will also be provided with a chance to continue their creative writing with the team at Sweatshop.

Entries close on March 17.
