Community film night highlights family and dementia

The Canterbury Bankstown Council will provide a free showing of film Everybody’s Oma for the community in Canterbury, Milperra and Bankstown. Highlighting the importance of family and the impacts of dementia, the film showing will act as a community awareness raising exercise of the importance of healthcare, family ties and keeping active.

Everybody's Oma is a heart-warming documentary film showcasing a family's love and care for their parent with dementia. Directed by its star, the film follows filmmaker Jason van Genderen. He is obsessed with making home videos about his family, especially his Dutch matriarch, Oma. As her dementia progresses, the family embrace caring for Oma and unintentionally turn her into a celebrity online.

As part of its ongoing commitment, Canterbury Bankstown Council is focused on the health and wellbeing of its citizens and remains keen in highlighting dementia and its effects in a setting that is both uplifting and community based. The film itself is directed by an Australian artist, adding to the sense of community generated by the project.

The film will be shown at the Bryan Brown Theatre & Function Centre at 80 Rickard Road Bankstown on February 17. The event is free to attend for all interested parties, but bookings are preferred. The event will begin at 10 am and conclude at 12 pm.
