Those affected by cancer in Milperra and surrounding areas will benefit from the proposed establishment of a major private cancer centre in nearby Revesby, New South Wales.
The $10m centre represents a state first in being the only privately run suburban cancer centre facility to be built anywhere in New South Wales.
The project is being undertaken by the Icon Group, which in terms of cancer care providers is the country’s largest.
Research found the Western Sydney location represented a district of high need, according to Icon Group chief executive Mark Middleton.
In another first for the centre, which will focus on haematology, radiation oncology and medical oncology, it will also be the only facility of its kind to be constructed independent from a hospital in Western Sydney, Middleton said. He added that one of the major benefits of the new centre will be its ability to provide treatments for cancer sufferers close to where they live.
The selected site was also central to an area that boasted a large ageing population where there was an immediate demand for more cancer services, said the chief exec.
Latest statistics listed as part of informative booklet printing releases by the Cancer Institute recorded 4,631 cases in the Bankstown area, which was the highest throughout the Southwest Sydney region.
To be accessible for both private and public patients, the centre is to host hi-tech equipment in the oncology wing, chemotherapy chairs, and the latest radiology equipment. It is expected allied health professionals and oncology staff will total about 30.
