Volunteer Week to be marked in the Hills Shire

Hard working people from around the Hills Shire will be celebrated this month as part of Volunteer Week.

There are more than 900 registered volunteers around the Shire, and the council is hoping to encourage more people to sign up during the promotion.

On May 22nd, the Volunteer Expo will be held at the Castle Grand facility in Castle Hill. During the expo, national and local organisations will be able to promote the services they offer and explain what volunteer opportunities are available. Printing services will no doubt have been used to create a variety of leaflets and Brochures, which visitors can take home to learn more about the organisations and how to help.

The event will also include a discussion about the role that youth has to play in volunteering in the future.

Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne explained that there was evidence of a small decrease in volunteer numbers, and the council was exploring new ways of encouraging helpers to come forward. She said:

“Research has shown that young people want to volunteer opportunistically. They want to help out for an hour here or an hour there. Our old system of volunteering simply wasn’t conducive to that. We wanted to loosen the regulations and constraints that were stopping young people from lending a hand.”

Volunteer Week runs until Sunday May 18th and information about council-run programmes will be available in the Castle Grand foyer all week.
