Early settlement of Castle Hill, New South Wales, saw the establishment of the Castle Hill Government Farm which operated from 1801 to 1811. Run by convicts it encompassed a 14,000 hectare site and provided stock and food for those who lived in the colony. Early landholders in the area introduced cattle and sheep and planted maize and wheat. Eventually orchards, which proved a more viable crop, sprang up. Families such as the Gilberts and Shores were proven achievers owning orchards in the district for over a century. As time went on citrus growing began to wane in favour of growing stone fruits and other industries such as milk, eggs and poultry. Market gardening entered the mix with the arrival of European migrants in the 1930s. The staff here at Minuteman Press are highly proficient in replicating some of the old photographs from the early settlement days on Print material including Brochures and Presentation Folders in Castle Hill.
The `Hills’ District as the Castle Hill area is known today has seen many changes during the past 100 years. An early tram and then railway system was closed in 1932 in favour of buses due to an increase in traffic using the roadways and the once larger land holdings were scaled down to make way for residential use. Manufacturing plants remain a vibrant local industry. Often featured as an image on Postcards, the local Darling Mills flour mill which dates back to 1825, is still active.
