Popular rose garden set to be revitalised

A popular rose garden that has been a favourite attraction to local residents in Castle Hill and Baulkham Hills for many years is set for an upgrade.

Construction is soon to begin on a modern new arbour at the Alfred Henry Whaling Memorial Reserve Rose Garden, with the upgrades also to include improvements to the stairs and walking paths, according to Hills Shire Mayor Michelle Byrne. She added:

“This is the first stage of the project to revitalise the popular garden, which draws people from all parts of Sydney to Baulkham Hills to literally smell the roses.”

A total of $300,000 has been budgeted during the current financial year for the works at the popular garden, which hosts 4,000 roses, representing 80 species, which are all beautifully manicured for optimum effect. Rose societies and local nurseries have donated many varieties of roses to the display. Among them are The Hills Centenary Rose, the Olympic Gold Rose and the Australian Bi-Centennial Rose.

The beauty of roses has inspired their broad use throughout the community, for everything from its incorporation into the Logo Design of many businesses to gifts on Valentine' s Day.

The Rose Garden's history dates back to about 1972, when the Royal Botanic Gardens Senior Landscape Designer first devised its concept design, and it is today believed to be among Sydney's largest displays. The magnificent garden enjoys a corner position at the junction of Mileham Avenue and Roxborough Park Road.
