More native trees to be added to local green spaces

Residents from Castle Hill are being encouraged to help plant native trees as part of National Tree Day later this month.

Volunteers will not have far to go, with one of this year’s selected sites located at Fred Caterson Reserve in Castle Hill.

It is hoped that around 10,000 native trees and shrubs will be planted at this reserve and at the Mackillop Drive Reserve in Baulkham Hills on the day.

National Tree Day is designed to encourage Australians to care for their natural environment and, since its inception in 1996, more than 20 million seedlings have been planted around the country.

The Hills Youth Army is already preparing to help dig, and Hills Shire Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne said she hopes many locals would also turn out for the cause. All residents need to do is arrive on the day with a pair of gloves and a hat. All other tools would be provided.

Volunteers will also be rewarded with a barbecue organised by the Lions Club.

Flyer printing would be a good way to promote the event and, groups of homeowners or work colleagues might like to get together and attend the event as a team.

National Tree Day takes place on Sunday, July 27th, and the planting events will be on between 9am and 1pm. For more information, visit the Hills Shire Council website.
