Castle Hill RSL Cricket Club celebrates 160 years

Castle Hill RSL Cricket Club will be celebrating their 160th anniversary with a gala dinner on Friday 31st August. Legendary Australian cricketers Doug Walters and Len Pascoe will entertain diners with stories of their cricketing careers, which included playing in the Australian Test team at one of its high points and the excitement and controversies around the birth of the World Series.

Cricket began in the district in the 1850s, with a match between Castle Hill and Kellyville, played on 19th April 1858, being reported in Bell’s Life in Sydney, a local newspaper of the time. By the 1880s there were several local clubs within easy reach of one another and the arrival of the railway brought more workers and players and made travel easier. Cricket became the traditional summer game and teams were often dominated by families with a large number of sons. Novelty matches, such as married versus single members, were often an annual affair, and single wicket matches, presenting opportunity for glory for the batsmen, were popular.

The gala dinner will be held in the Lyceum Room at Castle Hill RSL from 7pm-11pm. There will be a two-course meal plus cake and a live band. Tickets cost $99 or $950 for a table of ten, juniors $75. Ticket cost includes unlimited beer and wine.
