Warringah Council has taken the first step towards determining a blueprint for future development of areas surrounding the new Northern Beaches Hospital.
Consultant firm Hames Sharley has been appointed to put together a Precinct Structure Plan, which the council could then use as a guide for development and land uses in the area.
The move came after the NSW government requested that the council consider the hospital project implications on residents and business owners in the wider area, which takes in a range of suburbs including French’s Forest, Manly Vale, Dee Why, and Brookvale.
Mayor Michael Regan said it was a great opportunity to initiate an innovative precinct that provides accessible and friendly public spaces while also stimulating economic growth.
He was particularly keen to see the new health precinct contain sustainable transport options.
The State Government considered the project area a specialist precinct directly due to the many economic opportunities associated with the establishment of a new hospital.
The project is expected to take up to 12 months to complete and will consider transport, accessibility, traffic, economic, social and environmental issues, as well as the mix of development and open space.
Cr Regan said the Precinct Structure Plan was not a rezoning document, but rather a strategic document that identified ways to best develop an area, as well as infrastructure requirements.
Flyer printing is among the ways the council intends to keep community members updated on the plan’s progress.
