Cromer Park now hosts a new generation artificial turf surface on Field 1, replacing the previous synthetic turf, which had been used for the past 11 years. In addition to the new surface, which boasts an infill of natural cork rather than rubber to reduce the effect of hot days on players, the upgrade also included more storage to cater for six-a-side goals, and the installation of a new pump for use in the recycling of drained water from the site.
Mayor of Northern Beaches Michael Regan said the latest upgrades gave local players a premium-quality field, which is hoped will also attract some top level A-league teams. He added:
“Synthetic surfaces are more resilient to environmental factors and longer-lasting. Play or practice won’t need to be cancelled due to wet weather, returfing or weed control – that means more play time.”
As an extra measure to ensure debris is kept out of the waterways, the council has also installed foot brushes and fine mesh drains at the ground. Flyer printing campaigns have often helped spread the word about matches played on fields like this.
Cromer Park is home to local teams Manly United women's and men's, as well as being leased by Australia's largest football group, the 20,000-member-strong Manly Warringah Football Association.
