Residents of Brookvale in New South Wales will be among the thousands set to take part in this year’s 35km Challenge to Cure Mito.
Organisers described the event as an endurance navigation challenge to promote fitness and health in a fun environment for all the family, with the ultimate goal to raise money for The Australian Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (AMDF).
There is no cure and few effective treatments for ‘Mito’, a genetic disorder that is potentially fatal and debilitating. Diagnosis is costly and difficult, and its complex nature makes it hard to pinpoint, often leading to misdiagnosis.
The course extends the picturesque Northern Beaches of Sydney, from Palm Beach to North Head Sanctuary in Manly. The first group of walkers will set off from Governor Phillip Park at 7am.
Those taking part will be able to run, jog or walk along the scenic route, which offers everything from the light house at Palm Beach to breathtaking coastal scenery, including flora and fauna and the opportunity to see whales at play in the pristine waters during what is their traditional migration season. Drink stations will be located along the course.
Entrants are asked to raise a minimum of $400 to help fund research into finding a cure for the disease.
Flyer printing and information on the Bloody Long Walk website provide full details of the event to be held on October 19th.
