The first plans for redevelopment of Brookvale Oval into a giant stadium in Brookvale, New South Wales, are due to be finalised shortly.
According to Scott Penn, majority shareholder and chairman of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, intense deliberation on how the multi-million dollar project could be funded was needed before any proposals were released.
Mr Penn’s vision was to establish a multi-purpose stadium similar to United States-based venues such as the home ground of baseball’s San Francisco Giants, AT & T Park.
In addition to a 40,000-seat stadium, it hosts everything from food and retail outlets to concerts, a garden and a wall of fame.
The Brookvale Oval redevelopment needed to include 20,000 undercover seats and facilities such as a residential hotel and commercial and retail space, according to Mr Penn.
A comprehensive programme of regular events was also considered key to ensuring the stadium’s ongoing viability.
Regular flyer and poster printing would help keep residents informed of events and sporting fixtures.
Independent of the proposal, government funding of $20 million has already been allocated towards the construction of a new grandstand to seat 3000. However, Mr Penn said that any further funding allocation from the state government would be reliant on the project being a community asset, and certain Boxes needed to be ticked for that to happen.
Mr Penn said it was hoped completion of the stadium would be in time for the 2017 season.
