The Spring Independent School District recently hosted its annual literacy event for kids, designed to encourage and promote a love of reading by making it fun and relevant.
This year’s event took place on December 8 at Dekaney High School, with a theme of Winter Wonderland Around the World. The weather contributed to the winter wonderland feel, with a rare layer of snow falling in the area.
There were 15 different activity stations operated by Spring ISD staff wearing Santa hats and Christmas lights, or costumed as children’s book characters like the Cat in the Hat and ‘Frozen’ character Elsa. The stations offered story time and various hands-on crafts for the kids to take part in. Musical entertainment was provided by older students, with singers, dancers, and a jazz band on hand to participate. There was a Polar Express golf cart “train” to ride, and even a motorcycle riding Santa with his elves.
Participating children received a “passport” to have stamped when they completed an activity at each of the stations. Completion of seven activities earned them a chance to choose a free, wrapped book from a basket to take home along with their crafts. Cloth Bags, perhaps made by Print companies, were emblazoned with the event name for the children to take their items home in.
The event was well-attended, with more than 1,000 elementary and middle school children taking part.
