Jones Park is to host a cleanup event, and volunteers are welcome.
Those Spring residents who enjoy walking the trails at nearby Jones Park may be interested in an event being held there. A time for volunteers to gather and assist in trail restoration has been established - 8:30 am – 11:30 on April 30. The focus of the cleanup will be repairing damage the trails incurred from last year’s flooding.
Flooding is nothing new in the park, which is less than 12 miles from Spring and borders the Cypress Creek. Past damage has in some instances necessitated the creation of new trails to avoid the damaged areas. Katrina Yordy, the park’s naturalists are spearheading the volunteer cleanup effort and hopes this cleanup will be the start of many similar weekend events designed to rejuvenate the trails.
According to Darlene Conley, Jones Park director, some trails are covered in sand as deep as five feet. Volunteers will be asked to shovel and haul away sand. Other volunteer efforts will be aimed at trimming new growth, improving drainage, and diverting water flow with an eye toward making the trail system picturesque enough to adorn Calendars
Volunteers are asked to bring their own tools when possible, such as loppers and shovels. Additionally, participants in the event should wear long pants, close-toed shoes, and work gloves. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and can call the park to register.
