Spring H.S. home to Texas largest Navy JROTC program

It turns out that in addition to having America’s fifth biggest open-enrollment program, Spring High School also has the largest program in the Lone Star State.

The Navy JROTC program at Spring High School has for the last five years been among the largest in the country, with several hundred students participating in the open-enrollment program. Recently the school received official notification that its program is the nation’s fifth largest, as well as largest in Texas, with an official enrollment count of 417 students.

Navy JROTC programs with enrollment of more than 350 students are awarded the status of regiment. For each of the past five years, Spring High School has achieved this status using the name Spring High Lion Regiment. The school’s enrollment numbers during this period reached a maximum of 525.

According to the lead instructor for the program, Captain James Boyer, no JROTC program in the state comes close to Spring’s numbers. Likely factors in the schools’ large JROTC enrollment are the area’s strong patriotic sentiments and the scholarship potential.

Boyer and his staff work with students in their pursuit of scholarships. Although some Spring cadets have been accepted to West Point, as well as to the Coast Guard and Naval academies, document scanning of their school records is sent primarily where the most available money is – Texas universities.
