Early development
The geographical area influenced Solon's development to a great degree. The first settlers of European descent to arrive found extensive wetlands, which resulted in them mostly ignoring what would have been the logical center of town. When the Presbyterian Church was built in 1834, it was placed on pilings driven into the ground to a depth of four or five feet to stabilize it. However, once the issues were resolved, Solon developed arable farmland, and began producing wheat and corn, and establishing dairy farms – including five factories that made cheese.
Information about the early days of the community can be found at the Solon Historical Society, which was founded in 1968.
