School district in Colerain announces plans for next school year
Students in the Northwest School District, which serves Colerain, now know the exact date on which they can say goodbye to their summer vacation and hello to the new school year.
The board of education approved the calendar for the upcoming academic year at the end of last month. The biggest news for students might be the earlier start date. Classes resume on August 18, 2016, a full week earlier than during the 2015-2016 school year, Todd Bowling, the superintendent of the district, noted.
Bowling pointed out that the goal is ultimately to have the school year start a full two weeks earlier, around August 11. He believes that the extra days in August will help students be better prepared for AP tests, exams, and state assessments. Currently, the Northwest district begins the school year later than other districts. Bowling believes the late start is reflected in the performance of students at the schools.
The district could use mailing services to get the current school calendar out to families, so that they are able to make plans for the year to come and for next year's summer vacation. The plan is to have winter break start on December 21, 2016 and go until January 2, 2017. Spring break will be the first week in April 2017, and the last day of classes for students will be May 30.
Another big change is the scheduling of winter exams. They will now take place before the winter break, instead of afterward, so that students do not have to spend their breaks studying or worrying about upcoming tests.
