Colerain women vets honored with flight

Honor Flight Tri-State will offer women veterans in Hamilton County, including Colerain, a flight to Washington, DC to visit the memorials there.

Known once upon a time as WAVES, WACS, and WAFs (Women accepted for volunteer emergency service, Woman's Army Corps, and Women in the Air Force, respectively), women played a big role during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, although not as many organizations hire printing companies to honor female vets as they do for their male counterparts.

Honor Flight Tri-State was founded in 2007 with the goal of honoring veterans of the wars in the 20th century. The local branch is part of a network that extends across the country. The first Honor Flight was founded in 2005.

The upcoming flight is the first female-specific one. The organizers received 250 applications from veterans for 144 seats. To help choose the veterans, the organizers ranked the applications in order from oldest to youngest, choosing the 72 oldest and youngest. The younger veterans, those under age 40, get to fly as honor guards to the older vets. Some of the most elderly vets, who are in their late 90s, will bring along family members too.

Taking place next Tuesday, September 22, the flight is all expenses paid for the older veterans. The honor guards who fly are responsible for the $440 cost, unless they are able to find a sponsor.
